GANNI took romance out in bad weather. The lace stayed on. The ruffles stayed loud. The coats got bigger, the knits got heavier and not one soft thing was asked to toughen up before being taken seriously. Fall/Winter 2026 is a wardrobe for standing your ground without dressing like the ground is a battlefield.
Softness Has Teeth begins where so much fashion language gets lazy: with the assumption that delicacy and strength must cancel each other out. Ditte Reffstrup refuses the trade. A white dress can carry an entire weather system of flounces. A brown checked coat can open over lace instead of burying it. A puffer can swell around the body while a fringed skirt keeps moving below. These clothes do not stage a fight between feminine and functional. They let both arrive fully dressed.
The result feels recognisably GANNI and newly grown. The humour is still there, but it has stopped needing a punchline. The prints, colour and slightly crooked combinations remain, now held inside silhouettes with more weight and control. This is not the party girl abandoning the night. It is her learning that the walk home deserves a look too.
For a brand built on the pleasure of getting dressed, that shift matters. GANNI has never needed perfection as its sales pitch; it sells the electric moment when two pieces that should not know each other become impossible to separate. FW26 makes that chemistry feel intimate, protective and expensive in the best way. The lace does not decorate the coat. It changes its personality.
Romance got dressed for actual weather
The collection starts on the Danish coast, not in a fantasy garden. Reffstrup grew up in Hirtshals, the fishing town at the northern edge of Jutland where the wind is less an atmospheric detail than a member of the family. For FW26, she returned to that landscape and to the women who taught her what strength looked like before fashion gave it a silhouette: her mother, her sisters and a coastal community fluent in both resilience and feeling.
Inger Christensen’s poem The Water Tree helped unlock the memory. Björk offered another kind of compass: a woman whose apparent delicacy has never limited the scale of her force. Those references explain why the collection never treats softness as a nostalgic costume. Its ruffles are too active, its lace too insistent and its volume too aware of the body moving inside it. Nothing waits to be rescued. It is already on its way somewhere.
The brown checked coat makes the argument first. It is broad enough to register from a distance and sensible enough to understand February, but the white lace beneath it refuses to behave like an underlayer. It spills below the hem and interrupts the coat’s authority with something more interesting than contrast. The coat becomes less severe. The lace becomes less expected. Both pieces leave with a better reputation.
Then the white dress removes the protective layer entirely. Tiered ruffles gather volume down the body, sleeves relax and the hem keeps expanding until innocence is no longer a useful word. White is often styled as an absence, a blank or a bridal promise. Here it is abundance. The look takes every code associated with sweetness and pushes the scale until sweetness becomes presence.
Lace refuses the supporting role
The smartest clothes in FW26 do not simply layer hard over soft. They use one material to expose what the other was hiding. Structured denim looks more sculptural beside a white ruffle. A heavy knit becomes less casual when it lands above a floral skirt with the movement of eveningwear. The puffer’s technical volume makes the fringed blanket skirt beneath it feel even more tactile. Every look is a conversation, and nobody is waiting politely for a turn.
Consider the denim suit. Its deep wash, controlled waist and rounded sleeves give it the composure of tailoring, but the collar and cuffs bloom in white lace. The detail does not make the look prettier; it makes the structure visible. Suddenly the dark body of the suit feels denser, the shoulder more deliberate and the waist more exact. Femininity is not pasted on after the construction. It is the device that lets us see the construction clearly.
That same intelligence runs through the outerwear. An olive puffer expands around the shoulders while a large brown knit drops low over the head. Underneath, blanket fringe keeps the lower half of the body alive. The look offers warmth without flattening the wearer into a practical object. She can disappear into the collar and still be the most visible person in the room. GANNI understands that protection can be theatrical.
The palette holds all this texture together: tobacco brown, peat, cream, storm grey, moss and flashes of orange or violet. These are coastal colours after somebody turned the saturation back on. They make the collection easy to enter without making it quiet. A purple turtleneck and electric floral skirt can live beside a checked coat because both carry the same tension between comfort and display. One wants to keep you warm. The other wants to be remembered. The outfit wants both.
The GANNI woman grew a winter coat
There was a time when the “GANNI girl” could be reduced to a printed dress, a cowboy boot and an Instagram saved folder. The shorthand was flattering until it became too small. A woman can love the immediacy of those pieces and still want tailoring with authority, outerwear with purpose and a knit that does more than sit nicely above denim. FW26 expands the character without filing off the reason people wanted to dress like her in the first place.
Reffstrup’s history as a buyer still shows in the way these clothes solve a wardrobe rather than merely complete a runway image. The checked coat has enough identity to lead a season and enough restraint to survive the next one. The white dress can be allowed its full drama or pulled under a jacket until only the ruffle escapes. The denim suit works as a complete proposition, but the jacket is ready for somebody else’s skirt. This is fashion fantasy with an exit route into Tuesday.
That usefulness is part of the seduction. GANNI does not ask the customer to choose one fixed version of femininity and stay loyal to it. The collection moves between romantic, pragmatic, severe, playful and slightly strange without treating any of them as a contradiction. Getting dressed becomes less about declaring who you are forever and more about deciding which part of you gets the door tonight.
The accessories carry the same attitude. Handbags are photographed against rough stone, polished shapes meeting a surface that looks lifted from the coast. Furry collars enlarge the shoulders and frame the face. Low beanies disturb the sweetness of lace. Nothing is an afterthought, but nothing behaves like a precious object either. The pieces look ready to be worn hard, styled again and allowed to collect a life.
Individual pieces get their own pulse
A collection this layered can easily become one beautiful blur. FW26 avoids that by giving each look a dominant gesture. The checked coat owns its line. The white dress owns its volume. The denim suit owns the waist. The puffer owns the shoulder, while the purple knit makes colour the first point of contact. You remember the complete image, but you also remember the piece that made it happen.
That clarity matters beyond the page. The strongest brand feature should not ask a reader to admire a mood and then forget what produced it. GANNI’s clothes keep the concept attached to the object. Strength and softness are not floating campaign words; they are visible where lace meets denim, where fringe moves beneath nylon and where a floral skirt refuses to disappear under a thick sweater. The idea can be worn because it was cut into the clothes.
The styling gives every item permission to misbehave without making the wardrobe feel chaotic. A graphic T-shirt appears beneath grey tailoring and white ruffles, collapsing several dress codes into one useful look. Fur texture meets a printed dress and a polished black bag. Nothing matches in the obedient sense. Everything connects through touch, proportion and the confidence to leave one edge unresolved.
This is where GANNI remains unusually good at desire. The brand does not place clothes on a pedestal and wait for devotion. It lets them flirt with the person looking. A collar suggests a different coat. A skirt makes the sweater already in your wardrobe look newly possible. A bag introduces itself without demanding the entire outfit arrive with it. The collection sells a world by leaving the front door open.
Softness wins without becoming hard
The title of this story is deliberately aggressive, but the collection is smarter than the fantasy of hidden claws. Its power does not come from proving that lace can secretly behave like armour. Lace is allowed to remain lace: open, intricate, close to the skin and moved by air. The teeth are in the choice to wear it at full volume, beneath serious outerwear, through a hard season, without translating it into somebody else’s idea of strength.
That is the pleasure of GANNI FW26. It lets the wearer be visible without making her invulnerable, practical without becoming anonymous and romantic without drifting into costume. The clothes make room for contradiction because real wardrobes are built there. A woman can want shelter and exposure in the same look. She can wear a huge coat over a transparent impulse. She can arrive soft and still alter the temperature.
By returning to Hirtshals, Reffstrup found more than a colour palette or a weather report. She found a way to make the GANNI woman feel specific again: shaped by landscape, surrounded by other women, dressed for conditions and entirely unwilling to reduce herself to one adjective. The collection stands its ground because it knows ground is not the opposite of imagination. It is where imagination learns to walk.
FW26 does not ask femininity to bare its teeth for approval. It gives softness better clothes, a colder horizon and the confidence to remain exactly what it is. Explore the complete Fall/Winter 2026 presentation at GANNI. The weather can adjust.
